A better website starts with a better brief

Project brief document with website wireframes and planning notes

Describe the business problem

“We need a new website” is a starting point. What is difficult today? Are visitors unable to find a service, editors struggling to publish, or customers relying on manual steps? Describe the problem before prescribing features.

Identify the people and their tasks

Choose the audiences that matter most and the tasks they need to complete. Include the people maintaining the site. An attractive design is more useful when navigation and content support those tasks.

Take stock of content and systems

Record which content is current, who owns it, and what needs to be rewritten. List forms, analytics, search, and integrations so they can be considered early rather than discovered near launch.

Agree on constraints and priorities

Share your timeline, budget range, approval process, and hosting requirements. Separate what is essential for launch from improvements that can follow. This makes decisions easier when new ideas appear.

Define what a successful launch looks like

Choose observable acceptance criteria: the journeys that work, the content that is ready, and the team members who can operate the site. Agree on these before the build starts.
